The Great Java Viewdata client

Choosing to connect will have opened another window. Do not close this window. After a few seconds (hopefully!) this window will load the Java Client which will look like the window on the left. Please be patient; it may take up to a minute to load. To disconnect, either type *90# in the window, or close the bar titled "Java viewdata client." If the BBS seems to stop responding, try clicking inside the terminal window and trying again.

Mac users! There have been problems using the Java client on the Macintosh, for some reason. If you get a blank grey window, just try resizing it a little. This applies to Acorn users too. A new Mac java thingie can be found at http://applejava.apple.com/.

Thanks to Hugo Fiennes for writing this Java applet and James Cronin and Jon Ribbens for implementing it. The applet is about 12k. Please mail bug reports to any of the above addresses.

If you get a blank screen with a blue banner across the top, the applet cannot make a connection to the server. Please download a viewdata telnet client and try connecting again.

A few hints and tips

• If you are a new user and you are asked for a password when you enter your name at logon, someone is already using that name. Press * and try another name or nickname.
• Where something asks you to press #, read return
• You can move around the board by choosing number options from pages. You can jump to pages directly by typing the page's page number preceded by * and followed by #. (For example, page 6000 could be accessed with *6000#).
• You can find a list of pages to go to with *LIST#
• You can see who's online by going to the *WHO# page. From there you can also enter BCS, the multi user chat program
• The bulletin board scene was based around messages. Please leave a message or two when you log on!
• You will see people logged on with 'god' in their name. Gods are the people who run the bulletin board; ask them if you have any trouble.
• If you get stuck and need to mail God, type *999#
